New ED G codes leave some questions unanswered

Emergency Management Alert, April 3, 2007

Come now, put down that copy of Car & Driver. We know you just can't get enough of ED coding news. Luckily, we have an item here from our sister publication, Briefings on APCs:

Hospitals that have a "fast track" ED within their standard, 24-hour ED may experience operational problems with implementing the new HCPCS G codes for facility E/M visits, experts say. As a refresher, CMS has established five new G codes to report hospital visits to part-time, dedicated emergency departments (DED), or Type B EDs. These are EDs that are subject to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), but not open 24 hours per day, seven days per week like normal (Type A) EDs. CMS will pay for these DED G codes as clinic visits for two years to collect data.
