Q&A: Cellphone use in the hospital

Emergency Management Alert, April 3, 2007

Q: Does The Joint Commission specifically address the use of cell phones in the hospital as a whole or in the ED?

A: The Joint Commission does not regulate the use of cellular phones in hospitals. However, The Joint Commission does require that a hospital develop a plan for managing medical equipment risks, and in that plan the hospital must address the use of cellular phones in its facility, according Elizabeth Zhani, Media Relations Specialist, The Joint Commission, who contacted HCPro via email.
