A U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) review has turned up pest and physical plant problems in some of its New England hospitals.

The Boston Globe noted the following concerns in a story this week:

  • Mice at the VA Medical Center in Providence, RI, and masonry leaks in the same facility
  • A sewer pit backing up into a utility room at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, VT
  • Recurring reports of flies at an outpatient clinic in Hyannis, MA

The VA characterized the problems as normal for aging facilities, spokespeople told The Globe.

The VA began a nationwide review of its healthcare sites after the publicity surrounding poor conditions in parts of Water Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
