Patient restraint issues in the news:
This past week, the Barron, WI counseling center associated with the May 2006 restraints-related death of a seven-year-old girl was given the maximum fine of $100,000 on a felony count of negligent abuse. The company was also ordered to pay the girl's family $12,000 in restitution. One of the facility's staffers was sentenced to 60 days in jail. Martinez, CA: The Contra Costa County Regional Medical Center in California has discovered that some patient walk-aways are the result of a recent change in policy in which psychiatric patients brought in by police are routed through the standard emergency room before they are moved to the locked psychiatric unit. Staff are placing patients in restraints until they reach the locked psychiatric area. This opinion piece in the Contra Costa Times examines the practice and how it may affect policies relating to emergency room functioning, use of restraints, and patient care at large.
