First Responders' Corner: Is your bird-flu awareness campaign working?
Emergency Management Alert, March 9, 2007
In some places, apparently not. From the New York Times letters to the editor, March 7.
Re: "The Wider Shame of Walter Reed" (editorial, March 7):
The outrageous conditions at Walter Reed and the military health care system shortfall illustrate a much larger issue.
If the Army health care system can be overwhelmed by a few thousand wounded, how much more easily can the civilian health care system be overtaxed by sudden events like huge plane crashes and auto pileups, not to mention the Asian bird flu.
Even an occasional visitor to a hospital emergency room knows how the system is already stressed. Imagine what would happen in New York if 10,000 more people needed sudden care!
The Walter Reed debacle demonstrates just how near the edge our vaunted medical system is. We are not prepared!
