Tip of the Week: Hire a Medical Translation Firm
Emergency Management Alert, March 13, 2007
Jay Leno never fails to get a laugh from the audience when he shows a menu or product on "Headlines" with bungled English. Have you ever thought that you might be getting a similar reaction from non-English speakers who read home-made, foreign language signage in your ED?
Hiring a medical translation firm can help you communicate more effectively with patients while protecting yourself against lawsuits. You can arrange to have them draft documents from signage to insurance forms. If you haven't hired a translation firm already, you might start your research at the sites of the American Translators Association, which offers certification, or the National Council on Interpretation in Health Care, which addresses cultural issues as well as grammar! NCIH's mission is "to promote culturally competent professional healthcare interpreting as a means to support equal access to healthcare for individuals with limited English proficiency."
