California's Occupational Safety and Health program is working on a rule that would exceed federal regulations on fit-testing requirements for respirators used to prevent TB transmission, reports Inside OSHA, February 19.

The rule, which is before the California standards review committee, requires employers to fit-test and provide employees with at least an N-95 level respirator when entering workplace situations with aerosol transmissible pathogens hazards.

Aerosol transmissible diseases identified by the rule would include TB, chicken pox, measles, smallpox, SARS, and avian influenza. The rule would apply to healthcare facilities, high-hazard procedure treatment centers, correctional institutions, homeless shelters, drug abuse treatment centers, and laboratories, according to the article.
