Warning that influenza pandemic preparation is just not the job of the pubic sector, the American Public Health Association (APHA) released recommendations that include how private businesses deal with the threat.

Business-related recommendations from APHA Prescription for Pandemic Flu include:

  • Establishing guidelines for workers' compensation cases involving influenza exposure
  • Financially assisting employers who face extremely high costs for worker protection
  • Requiring businesses to develop pandemic preparedness plans
  • Mandating employee training in prevention and exposure control
  • Recommending that employees in high-risk occupations wear respirators rather than surgical masks

The 16-page report also addresses improving influenza pandemic planning strategies for local, state, and federal governments.
