The U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) will create a hazardous waste and chemicals inventory system at its VA hospitals in New England following a settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The announcement stems from hazardous waste violations that EPA inspectors found in 2005 at the VA's White River Junction (VT) Medical Center.

Establishing the system will cost the VA at least $500,000, and the agency will also pay a fine of $49,748 for the Vermont violations, the EPA said on January 24.
