As the U.S. workforce ages, employers will need to make safety accommodations for employing older workers. That was a challenge American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) President Donald S. Jones Sr., P.E., CSP, identified in his January 3 annual message to membership.

ASSE recommendations for protecting older workers include

  • improving illumination
  • adding color contrast
  • eliminating heavy lifts
  • designing work floors with smooth and solid decking while still allowing some cushioning
  • reducing static standing time
  • removing clutter from computer screens and using large video displays
  • reducing noise levels

It is estimated that by 2014 the 55-and-older age group will make up 21.2% of the workforce.
