Exposure to blood, injuries from lifting patients, and breathing in airborne infectious agents comprise the list of top hazards to healthcare workers in 2007.
The Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) surveyed its membership last summer to identify its 2007-2009 pubic policy goals which it released on January 10:
- Bloodborne pathogen exposure: Advocating for the elimination of written consent for HIV testing to expedite exposure source testing.
- Safe patient handling: Ensuring a safer healthcare environment by utilizing lift/assist devices as the primary method for the prevention of back injuries.
- Respiratory protection: Utilizing systems and processes that are evidence-based and supported through research to prevent infections from tuberculosis and other airborne respiratory transmissible diseases.
