A government report about the relationship between The Joint Commission and its affiliate, Joint Commission Resources, Inc. (JCR), wasn't exactly the barnburner some industry observers had anticipated.

Overall, the U.S. Government Accountability Office--a federal watchdog agency--concluded that The Joint Commission and JCR have a solid series of measures in place to prevent conflicts of interest. JCR offers accreditation consulting services and publishes official Joint Commission newsletters.

Even with the cautionary measures in place, "it will take ongoing monitoring and a concerted effort on the part of the leadership of both organizations to ensure that these policies and procedures are appropriately implemented by both their board and staff members," the government concluded.

The presidents of The Joint Commission and JCR generally agreed with the report, titled Hospital Accreditation: Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' Relationship with Its Affiliate.
