OSHA interpretation letters address workplace violence hazards

OSHA letters of interpretations addressing guns in the workplace and violence in nursing homes appeared on the agency's Web site last month.

The letters affirm that OSHA's Guidelines for Preventing Workplace Violence for Health Care & Social Service Workers are voluntary, but if "the risk of violence and serious personal injury are significant enough to be 'recognized hazards,' the general duty clause. . .would require the employer to take feasible steps to minimize those risks."
