Occupational bloodborne infections in the British healthcare system have increased nearly 50% from 2002 to 2005.

Eye of the Needle, a report by the government's Health Protection Agency, says that the increase may be due to an actual rise in case incidence or better awareness about reporting exposures.

The majority of the cases involved injuries from hollow-bore needles with exposure to blood infected with hepatitis C.
