Healthcare workers once considered potential hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections as part of the job. Now, routine vaccinations and standard precautions make HBV infections in healthcare settings a "rare event," says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"Since the mid-1990s, the incidence of HBV infection among healthcare workers has been lower than that among the general population," according to A Comprehensive Immunization Strategy to Eliminate Transmission of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in the United States, published by CDC, December 8.

The CDC continues to identify healthcare workers as a high-risk population for HBV. An appendix to the report that addresses immunization management issues includes sections on vaccination dose and administration, dosing intervals, post-vaccination testing, and booster doses.
