It is not widely known that OSHA protects whistleblowers not just for reporting violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, but for 13 other federal laws as diverse as the Clean Air Act and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which addresses accounting reform and investor protection.

Whistleblowers are employees who file complaints about employers that violate federal law and, as a result, have protection against employer retaliation.

Your Rights as a Whistleblower, a new fact sheet by OSHA, lists the federal laws for which the agency has whistleblower protection investigatory powers, and defines employer retaliation. In addition to the obvious form of retaliation-firing or laying off an employee-employer-prohibited retaliations include demoting, denying overtime or promotion, reducing pay or hours, and even reassignment affecting prospects for promotion.
