A greater number of complications following breast reconstruction surgery occur with women who are significantly obese than with women who are either normal weight or overweight.

Researchers from the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, examined the outcomes of such surgeries by the body mass index (BMI) category of 3,518 women who underwent breast reconstruction.

With women whose BMI was 40 and above (20-25 is normal, 25-30 is overweight, 30-40 is obese, and over 40 is morbidly obese), the complication rate neared 100%.
