CAMH’s EM directives go beyond EC chapter

Emergency Management Alert, October 16, 2006

The emergency management chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH) is not the only section of the CAMH you should be consulting in emergency planning, says Tom Huser, who wrote the just-released third edition of Environment of Care: Guide to the JCAHO's Management Plans. Other standards related to emergency planning include:

  • IC.6.10: Requires that members of the infection control department have a plan to respond to an influx of patients with infectious diseases.
  • IM.2.30: Requires that members of the information technology department have a plan ensuring continual flow of information during a disaster, especially that relating to patients' records.
  • LD.3.15: Requires that members of the leadership team take responsibility in effecting efficient patient flow during a disaster.
  • MS.4.11: Requires that members of the medical credentialing department have a plan in place to provide temporary privileges to outside physicians and other primary care providers during a disaster.

Don't forget JCAHO's mandates for vaccinations. Effective January 1, 2007, all healthcare facilities must offer annual influenza vaccines to staff and licensed independent practitioners (LIPs), at the very least. The facility must provide the vaccination on-site. It must educate all staff and LIPs about the flu vaccine, and take appropriate precautions to prevent spread and contraction of the flu. Facilities should evaluate vaccination rates annually along with the reasons for not being immunized, and they must implement plans to increase the number of vaccination recipients
