U.S. Representative John Conyers Jr. (D-MI) introduced a bill that would require healthcare facilities to develop safe patient handling policies and purchase lift equipment. Submitted September 26, the Nurse and Patient Safety & Protection Act of 2006 would mandate OSHA to develop and enforce a patient handling standard.
Six states (Hawaii, New York, Rhode Island, Ohio, Texas, and Washington) have patient lifting laws in place, and four states (California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey) have introduced safe patient handling legislation.
