Newly uninsured in TN further bloat state's EDs

When 170,000 people were dropped from TennCare a year ago, where did patients go? You betcha, the ED: Here are some figures reported October 2 by the Tennessean, which printed these figures from billing reports compiled by the Tennessee Hospital Association showing the effects of the visits of the uninsured:

  • A 24.9 percent increase in the number of emergency room visits by patients with no health insurance in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2005.
  • A 67.5 percent increase in the cost of providing emergency-room services.
  • An 89.3 percent jump in the cost of caring for uninsured patients admitted to the hospital.

Officials say these increases are forcing hospitals to operate more efficiently, but they also say hospitals have no choice but to pass along at least part of the cost to their paying customers.
