On Tuesday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency formally released provisions for hospitals participating in the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

NIMS sets 17 "implementation activities" for healthcare systems that seek federal bioterrorism preparedness funding through the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. Hospitals that applied for this funding for fiscal year 2006 must comply with NIMS.

Beyond funding ties, hospitals may eventually find themselves needing to abide by NIMS in order to fully integrate with state and local preparedness systems.

NIMS will gel with the upcoming revision to the Hospital Incident Command System, otherwise known as HICS IV.  HICS (formerly called HEICS, or Hospital Emergency Incident Command System) is published by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority and voluntarily adopted by many hospitals. Expect to see HICS IV posted online by October 1.
