The Joint Comission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) issued a Sentinel Event Alert September 6, that urges healthcare providers to consider the impact of a disaster, or any other major event, in terms of their ability to maintain patient safety when emergency power systems fail.
In response to the severe hurricanes the U.S. has experienced, as well as blackouts, tornados, and forest fires, JCAHO offers practical solutions to maintain proper patient care and facility operation. These include:
- Create an inventory of emergency power systems and the amount of instruments they can provide power for
- Provide training for the staff who will operate and maintain the emergency power supply systems
- Ensure genator fuel is available, easily accessable, and well stocked
