Tropical Storm Ernesto challenged many healthcare facilities in its path last week, including a hospital in Newport News, VA, that lost generator power.

Mary Immaculate Hospital lost regular power at about 8:30 a.m. on September 1, and four hours later the generator went down, according to the Daily Press of Newport News.

Staff had to ventilate some patients by hand during the outage, and the hospital transferred three of its 72 patients to other medical facilities.

Another hospital and a relative of a patient donated smaller generators during the power loss, which staff used to charge batteries on IV pumps and run respirators. A new backup generator went online at about 8:30 that night.

It's unclear why the main generator failed--staff had even tested it a week earlier, a hospital spokesperson told the Daily Press.
