Officially speaking, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hopes to publish revisions to its isolation precautions guideline in the fall, perhaps before November, spokesperson Nicole Coffin told HCPro last week.
There is at least some skepticism about that schedule because the revisions are still under review by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. We'll keep you posted.
Anticipated changes, based on an earlier draft of the revisions, could include sections on new pathogens (e.g., SARS and avian influenza), healthcare-acquired infections, settings beyond hospitals, and respiratory etiquette.
The current Guideline for Isolation Precautions in Hospitals has been in effect since 1996.
