Web site tracks bird flu testing in the US

Web site of the week: HEDDS

Would you like to know how many birds in the U.S. have been tested for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)? And in what locations? Scientists are now using the newly developed database and Web application called HEDDS (HPAI Early Detection Data System) to share information on sample collection sites, bird species sampled, and test results.

The database, which we accessed through a link from from the United States Geologic Survey, is designed to serve the needs of agencies, organizations, and policymakers performing research on the avian flu.

Scientists will use the data to assess risk and refine monitoring strategies should HPAI be detected in the United States, according to an August 24 USGS press release. Public access to the site is limited, but shows the states where samples have been collected and includes numbers of samples collected from each state.
