A man being held by police while he awaited trial allegedly shot and killed a hospital security officer on Sunday after an exam.

The suspect was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, VA, for injuries suffered after falling out of a jail bed, The Roanoke Times reported.

While in a hospital bathroom later, the suspect allegedly attacked a sheriff's deputy, took his gun, and shot the security officer en route to escaping. Later, he also allegedly shot and killed a sheriff who was on his trail. A day-long manhunt ended on Monday when police caught up the suspect.

Because of the suspect's initial injuries, his right wrist was not handcuffed when he arrived at the hospital, a sheriff's captain told the newspaper. His left wrist was attached to a chain on his waist and he did not go in leg irons.

The hospital has increased its security staffing in the wake of the shooting.
