To meet the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organization's new patient safety goal requiring facilities to involve patients in their own care as a patient safety strategy, it is important to relay a message to patients that they should report any concerns they may have about their safety throughout or after their course of care.

Communicate this message prior to patients receiving care and reinforce it during and after, such as through a statement on a preadmission call, statement in a brochure, posting in the lobby, and statement by any clinical personnel coming into contact with the patient during their course of care.
