State healthcare workers in Brevard County, FL, will receive and be fit-tested for N95 respirators for protection against pandemic viruses or chemical agents used in an attack, according to the July 29 Florida Today.
Providing the respiratory protection equipment and the training to more than 500 workers is a collaborative effort between the county health department, Wuesthoff Health Systems, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In the article, a county health department source said that the N95 masks are the type of protection healthcare workers will need when treating patients with avian flu or responding to an emergency such as an anthrax attack.
Editor's note: Healthcare worker respiratory protection is the subject of Comply with CDC and OSHA Respiratory Standards: Strategies for infectious and chemical agents, an HCPro audioconference on September 27. For information, click here or call customer service at 800/650-6787.
