After a year of study, Florida's state medical licensing board has decided against tougher punishments for surgeons who commit wrong-site surgery, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

The decision comes despite a continued increase in wrong-site surgeries in the state.

Instead of additional punishment, the board has asked surgeons to focus on improving processes to catch mistakes before they're made. The board plans to send out letters and posters urging doctors and hospital staff to take a timeout to confirm patient identity, body part, and procedure before beginning surgery.

Fines for first offenses have been reduced, and the board rejected a proposal to suspend second-time offenders. Physicians would be suspended after a third offense.
