Bariatric surgery patients are more likely to experience complications from surgeries over time-nearly four of every 10 patients develop a complication within six months after surgery, according to a study by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

The study followed patients for 180 days after their respective surgeries, and measured both hospital and outpatient care. Previous studies had tracked complications from immediately past surgery to 30 days after the operation. The extended observation revealed more complications occurring well after the surgical date.

The complication rate for patients reached 39.6% by the end of the 180-day study period. The number of Americans having obesity surgery quadrupled between 1998 and 2002, according to an AHRQ press release.
