Your anesthesia provider should participate in the correct-site verification process at least twice leading up to the procedure, as follows:

1. Prior to providing anesthesia. Before a provider administers medication, he or she should verify who the patient is and what procedure will be performed, and assist in marking the site of surgery.

2. Immediately prior to the procedure. Conduct the final site verification in the operating room (OR) suite immediately prior to the surgery and not before. This way, there won't be any mishaps from the time the patient could have been identified in the preoperative area and then moved into the OR suite.
