Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has announced an initiative to eliminate prescription errors caused by bad penmanship and prohibited abbreviations by requiring the state's physicians to use electronic prescriptions, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

The change would also help alert pharmacists to potential allergic reactions or dangerous drug interactions, according to the article. The initiative sets a goal date of 2011 for most of its provisions, but Blagojevich hopes to switch prescriptions over in the next year.

The initiative also creates a Division of Patient Safety within the Illinois Department of Public Health focused on reducing medical mistakes and overseeing the switch to e-prescribing.
