The Environment Department of New Mexico fined Alta Vista Regional Hospital, Las Vegas, NM, $44,500 for dumping medical waste in a landfill.

Investigators found a sharp, an uncapped syringe with attached needle, gloves, pipettes, drapes, gauze, pillows, accumulation bags, suction containers, and plastic tubing containing blood, according to the department's July 12 announcement. Some of the waste was in red biohazard bags, which were contained in several layers of black plastic trash bags.

The hospital has 30 days to respond to the fine and may request a public hearing.
