The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) plans to formally ask for an extension of a key deadline if an obstacle to electronic Statement of Conditions (SOC) submissions isn't cleared.
As of now, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) will require all hospitals to submit electronic versions of Parts 2 and 4 of the SOC as of January 1, 2007. However, the JCAHO has not developed a way for facilities to easily export SOC information saved in electronic formats, such as Excel spreadsheets. That means hospital staff will have to type data into the JCAHO's program.
"That's an incredibly inefficient use of our time . . . and it's prone to errors," said Dale Woodin, ASHE's executive deputy director. Woodin spoke during the group's annual conference this week in Boston.
As a result, if the JCAHO doesn't come up with an import/export tool for its Web-based SOC by January 1, ASHE will request that the commission extend its deadline, Woodin said.
