The SharpShield's needle sheath deploys passively and locks into place after injection, while the needle is still under the skin, according to the manufacturer, Devon Medical, King of Prussia, PA. Protection from accidental sticks and contamination for the healthcare worker begins before the needle is withdrawn from the patient.
The syringe will be available in sizes of 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, and 60 cc, with needle sizes ranging from 18-27 gauge in all lengths.
