Nursing home fire stats
From the March 2006 NFPA report U.S. Fires in Selected Occupancies are these statistics on the top sources of nursing home fires:
41% cooking equipment
23% various sources
14% clothes dryer or washer
9% heating equipment
7% smoking materials
6% electrical
According to an analysis in the current issue of HCPro's monthly newsletter, Healthcare Life Safety Compliance, there were 4,130 fires in nursing homes in 2002, almost equal to the 4,190 that occurred the year before. About 40% of the 2002 fires were cooking-related, with kitchens topping the list of the areas where a fire was most likely to start.
