New York State passed a new law to improve work site safety in the public sector, including public healthcare facilities, according to a June 14 Newsday article.

Governor George Pataki signed the legislation, which requires employers to consider violence risk factors and put written violence prevention programs into place.

The legislation was inspired in part by an incident in 2003 at Stony Brook (NY) University Hospital. In that event, a man armed with a gun held seven people hostage, including a nurses' station clerk who had previously warned security officers about the man's threatening behavior, the article reported.
