Use checkboxes to standardize handoff communication

To meet the challenge of standardizing an approach to handoff communication-one of the Joint Commission on Accreditation on Health Care Organizations' (JCAHO) National Patient Safety Goals for ambulatory providers-add a small box to a patient's chart with a checklist of the actions that staff should take during the handoff process.

Staff can then check off the boxes of the checklist to indicate that they completed the actions.
