On July 1, JCAHO surveyors will begin reviewing hospitals under a revised environment of care (EC) standard.

EC.4.20 discusses requirements for emergency management tests, and the standard's scored elements will increase from five to 14.

New provisions call for a designated observer to monitor emergency tests and document opportunities for improvement. EC.4.20 also features explicit requirements for critiquing drills.

Check out the current Briefings on Hospital Safety for a compliance checklist for this revised standard.
