ISMP, FDA campaign to reduce medication errors

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have launched a national education campaign aimed at reducing medication errors by eliminating the use of ambiguous medical abbreviations, according to an ISMP press release.

The campaign seeks to educate healthcare professionals, medical students, medical writers, the pharmaceutical industry, and FDA staff about potentially confusing medical abbreviations with an online toolkit. The kit includes:

  • ISMP error-prone abbreviatons list
  • Brochure on error-prone abbreviations
  • Print public service ad
  • Abbreviations slide set
