Healthcare workers may not pass muster for the new mumps immunity criteria established by the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Mumps outbreaks of 2,597 cases reported in 11 states since January prompted the ACIP to amend the 1998 mumps vaccination recommendation in the June 1 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Healthcare workers must now receive two doses of live mumps virus vaccine instead of one dose to achieve acceptable immunity, says the ACIP. Workers who have received only one dose should consider getting a second dose, especially if they work in a facility in an outbreak area, the report adds.
