At last week's National Fire Protection Association conference in Orlando, FL, a representative from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) indicated that there is no definitive answer on whether the agency will switch from the 2000 edition to the 2006 edition of the Life Safety Code® (LSC).

One of CMS' main safety initiatives is to soon require all nursing homes to have sprinklers, including retroactive installation, said Mayer Zimmerman, LSC specialist at the agency.

While the 2006 LSC requires nursing homes to have such sprinkler protection, CMS is also considering a more specific regulation that focuses on the sprinkler issue, Zimmerman told attendees at a panel session during the conference.

For its part, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations plans to stay in line with whatever version of the LSC that CMS recognizes, said George Mills, senior engineer at the commission.
