On Monday, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) announced its annual list of new National Patient Safety Goals that hospitals must carry out by January 1, 2007.

Safety officers will take particular interest in a new goal that requires facilities to identify patients who are at risk for suicide.

This goal applies to psychiatric hospitals and general hospitals that treat patients for emotional or behavioral disorders, according to the JCAHO.
