JCAHO releases 2007 National Patient Safety Goals for ASCs

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Monday announced its annual list of National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) that all accredited ambulatory organizations must meet by January 1, 2007.

Organizations must continue to meet the 2006 goals. For 2007, the new and revised goals and requirements for ambulatory surgery centers and office-based surgery centers are:

  • Goal 8 (medication reconciliation) requirement 8B-"The complete list of medications is also provided to the patient on discharge from the facility." (Revised)
  • Goal 13 (patient-centered care)-"Encourage patients' active involvement in their own care as a patient safety strategy." (New)
  • Requirement 13A-"Define and communicate the means for patients and their families to report concerns about safety and encourage them to do so." (New)
