OSHA included nursing homes and personal care facilities as part of its 2006 site-specific targeting (SST) inspections, according to a May 31 announcement.

"Inspections will focus primarily on ergonomic hazards relating to resident handling; exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials; exposure to tuberculosis; and slips, trips, and falls."

OSHA bases SST inspections on injury and illness data from 80,000 surveyed employers. Work sites with "12 or more injuries or illnesses resulting in days away from work, restricted work activity, or job transfers for every 100 full-time workers" will be on the primary inspection list, says the OSHA announcement.
