June 5 marks the 25-year anniversary of the first identified cases of AIDS reported by the CDC. The June 6 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) focuses on the epidemiology and evolution of prevention measures for HIV/AIDS, "one of the greatest public health challenges both nationally and globally," according to the report.
MMWR points out that identification of healthcare workers as a group at increased risk for HIV was one of the early prevention measures taken by the CDC.
The CDC has published two notable documents that specifically address healthcare workers' occupational exposure to HIV
Updated U.S. Public Health Service Guidelines for the Management of Occupational Exposures to HIV and Recommendations for Postexposure Prophylaxis, December 30 2005
If you are not familiar with these documents, you should be. OSHA requires adherence to the guidelines for compliance with its bloodborne pathogens standard.
