The federal government released a new rule that revises transportation requirements for infectious substances, including regulated medical waste.

The regulation was issued on June 2 by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, an arm of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The rule will harmonize certain hazardous waste requirements with those of the United Nations, International Civil Aviation Organization, and International Maritime Organization. Broadly, the changes include

  • new classification criteria
  • new exceptions
  • packaging and hazard communication requirements consistent with revised international standards
  • clarification about existing requirements to promote compliance

The rule takes effect on October 1, 2006, though facilities may voluntarily comply with it starting July 2.
