Refinement of existing requirements, rather than bold new initiatives, may be the direction the JCAHO takes with its 2007 National Patient Safety Goals.

JCAHO Vice President and Chief Patient Safety Officer Peter A. Angood hinted as much during a speech before the 8th annual National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) Congress in San Francisco last week. Angood also is a member of the NPSF board of governors.

It appears that the JCAHO is taking note of field concern that the traditional date of Goals release (the end of May) and their implementation due date (the beginning of January) may be causing fatigue. Angood said facilities could use some "breathing room." In the past two years, meeting the medication reconciliation and hand-off communication goals have challenged accredited organizations.
