OSHA publishes guide for toxic disinfectant

OSHA posted Best Practices for the Safe Use of Glutaraldehyde in Health Care on its Web site last week. The 48-page document will help employers and employees understand and control exposures to glutaraldehyde, a common and hazardous chemical used to disinfect and clean heat-sensitive medical, surgical, and dental equipment.

The document contains recommendations applicable to all healthcare settings that use glutaraldehyde, including

 selection and use of personal protective equipment

 employee information and training

 exposure monitoring

 disposal of glutaraldehyde solutions

 spill control and cleanup procedures
