Study rates nurses above surgeons in OR safety

Teamwork in the operating room is essential to safety, and nurses score better than surgeons, according to study measuring attitudes toward the work environment and appearing the May Annals of Surgery.

Investigators from the John Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD, surveyed 2,135 operating room staff from a Catholic health system comprising 60 hospitals in 16 states during July and August 2004. The respondents found that 65% of surgeons and 83.5% of general surgical nurses exhibited a high or very high level of teamwork. At 85%, certified registered nurse anesthetists received the highest teamwork rating while anesthesiologists came in third at 79%.
