Study rates nurses above surgeons in OR safety

Investigators from the John Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD, surveyed 2,135 operating room staff from a Catholic health system comprising 60 hospitals in 16 states during July and August 2004. The respondents found that 65% of surgeons and 83.5% of general surgical nurses exhibited a high or very high level of teamwork. At 85%, certified registered nurse anesthetists received the highest teamwork rating while anesthesiologists came in third at 79%.
